Trauma, Loss and Grief Therapy is offered both as a single unit, or as part of the Master of Counselling and PsychotherapyThe aim of this subject is to examine the phenomenology of traumatic stress experience, the theories that explain it and various selected approaches to its treatment, including loss- and grief-related aspects. The unit covers cognitive / meaning-making, emotional, somatosensory, and interpersonal aspects of traumatic experience, as well as diagnostic categories and approaches to formulation which are often applied to such experiences. Treatment approaches covered are centred around the self-trauma model (in the textbook), but also touches on emotion-focussed, sensorimotor, and schema therapy approaches.

Taught at Master level (AQF 9), you will have the choice as to whether you undertake assessments in this unit or not. Those undertaking assessments may use this unit as a credit towards the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy at The Cairnmillar Institute.

Please note, single subject enrolment does not guarantee students a place in a Cairnmillar program of study. Eligibility criteria and recognition of prior learning restrictions do apply. For all enquiries, please contact to our Education team.
