Existential Psychotherapy and the Group Process is offered both as a single unit, or as part of the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy. This unit is taught in the format of an experiential group, with a focus on relationship and its connection to theory. The purpose of this highly experiential unit is to advance the students’ intellectual and personally located knowledge of the various ways that the European and American schools of existential psychotherapy have both challenged traditional psychological frameworks of therapy and the person and opened new possibilities for the way psychotherapy might be understood and practiced.  The themes of death, freedom, responsibility, isolation and meaninglessness will be explored as central concepts for the psychotherapist as they strive to examine human existence and the inevitable dilemmas of living in the world.

Taught at Master level (AQF 9), you will have the choice as to whether you undertake assessments in this unit or not. Those undertaking assessments may use this unit as a credit towards the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy at The Cairnmillar Institute.

Please note, single subject enrolment does not guarantee students a place in a Cairnmillar program of study. Eligibility criteria and recognition of prior learning restrictions do apply. For all enquiries, please contact to our Education team.
