If you completed an APAC accredited undergraduate degree (or equivalent overseas qualifications as assessed by the APS) more than ten years ago and have not undertaken any additional APAC accredited studies in psychology in the intervening time, then you may be asked to complete a refresher sequence prior to a formal offer being made for the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours).

The information below applies to applicants who are asked to complete a refresher sequence prior to applying for the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours):
You will need to complete 4 units (one semester full-time or equivalent part-time) from a Graduate Diploma of Psychological Science (GradDipPsychSci) or equivalent APAC accredited 2+3 year sequence (APAC level 1) or Bachelor of Psychology undergraduate degree.

We recommend our Graduate Certificate in Psychological Science. The Graduate Certificate in Psychological Science consists of any 4 units of 6 offered from the Graduate Diploma of Psychological Science program. It can be studied full time in one semester (half a year) or part-time in two semesters (one year).

You must undertake PSY402 (Data Sciences and Statistical Inference) or an equivalent research methods unit as part of your refresher sequence unless you are otherwise able to demonstrate current knowledge and training in statistics and research methods. You can undertake any other three units offered in the Graduate Certificate in Psychological Science or any other units which contribute to the APAC accredited major sequence in an alternative program.

If you already hold an APAC accredited undergraduate degree or equivalent you will need to obtain a 70% average in your 4 Graduate Certificate in Psychological Science units and maintain satisfactory academic integrity and personal conduct during your studies for a guaranteed offer to our APAC accredited 4th year program the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours). You will be able to complete this refresher in one semester full-time or two semesters part-time (one year) and will not normally require the additional 4 units to complete the Graduate Diploma if you already hold an APAC accredited undergraduate degree or equivalent. Guaranteed Honours offers do not apply to alternative or external refresher sequences.

NOTE: the Graduate Certificate in Psychological Sciences is taught online only, the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) is normally only offered as an on campus course in Melbourne. Interstate students may need to consider alternative options for 4th year study.

Once you complete your refresher training, you would be able to apply to the standalone 1-year Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) program. The BPsych(Hons) program is an APAC accredited 4th year program, also known as APAC level 2.

Once you have completed your Honours program, you would then be able to apply for a Master of Professional Psychology (5+1) or a Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) and other APAC accredited Masters or Doctoral programs in psychology.

You will need to undertake your Masters (Master of Professional Psychology or Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology)) and may also need an internship or second Masters year if you follow a 5+1 pathway. At a minimum this will be at least 2 more years of study and/or supervised practice before you can gain registration as a psychologist with AHPRA.

This pathway would take at least 3.5 years until you are eligible for general registration if studied full-time, not including the years of prior study.
