Cognitive psychology focuses on the internal mechanisms of how we select, encode, store, retrieve, and use information from the world around us both consciously (effortfully) and unconsciously (automatically). This unit will explore visual and auditory processing, attention, executive functioning, short- and long-term memory, and language processes (e.g., writing and reading). The emphasis is on normal functioning, however disordered cognition will also be visited to highlight the problems that can arise from issues in cognition.
