Suicide risk assessment and intervention can be a difficult area for psychologists and counsellors. Many of us don’t have a practical framework for working with clients experiencing suicidality and we can become stressed by having to carry the load alone. Often our training in this area is minimal or based on strategies more suited to a team based workplace where suicidal clients are managed in partnership.

This workshop will be experiential and practical, and participants can expect to come out with the basic skills to assess client risk, intervene appropriately and refer effectively.

  • How to identify suicide risk – signs and symptoms
  • How and when to ask questions about suicide
  • How to assess the level of suicide risk
  • Suicide intervention strategies based on current research
  • Duty of care with suicidal clients
  • Referral options for acutely and chronically suicidal

This workshop is relevant to ongoing and continuing professional development for counsellors and psychologists may meet the CPD requirements for approximately 6 active CPD points.

  • Assessment of presenting problem
  • Case conceptualisation
